Request a purchase from the library

When using reading materials in electronic format we recommend is to provide students with links to records in HoyaSearch. This way you conform to copyright law and make use of the many resources available directly from the library.

How to Add Links from HoyaSearch

It is possible to add links in Canvas to e-books and full-text articles found in HoyaSearch. To do this, begin by finding the e-book or full-text article you want to use in your course.

First, find the title you want to use and verify that it is available in an electronic format.

Next, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the PERMALINK icon and copy the permalink.

Finally, use the copied permalink in Canvas to create a link that your students can click on to access the resource through HoyaSearch.

How to add links directly from a database

Many library subscription databases include a permalink feature, which makes it possible to link students directly to database articles with a URL that contains Georgetown proxy information for authentication.

First, use the library's A-Z database list to find a database that has the content you want

Next, select an article and click on it to view more detailed information

Finally, within the article detail page, look out for the keyword "Permalink" or something similar. Once the permalink is available, copy it.

It's important to check that the link includes proxy information, which will send students to an Georgetown authentication page before displaying the article information.

For example, the link for the article above is: http://proxy.library.georgetown.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=ip,uid&db=aph&AN=118483316&site=ehost-live&scope=site

This link begins with the proxy information, in bold above. This is important to ensure students gain access to the full-text and avoid any problems gaining access to the article

Course Reserves:

  • Printed books: You can select materials that will be added on the Course Reserve Shelf. Students can request scanned chapters by contacting the library
  • DVDs: DVDs can be made available to students by being digitized and uploaded in Canvas.

Contact your librarian for more options or to send your list of items.

If you can't find the video you are looking for in the GUQ Library collection, you can suggest a purchase using the online form.

Adding Sharestream Media Content to Canvas

To request a DVD be digitized, please fill out the Film Digitization Request Form for each film you would like digitized. Contact the library for more information.

When streaming content is not available through HoyaSearch it is possible to use Georgetown University's streaming media service - Sharestream.

It's possible to stream content within a Canvas course. If content is available in Sharestream, a few steps must be taken to get the media added into Canvas.

Step 1: Enable ShareStream Media Manager Menu Option

Media Manager is primarily used as an interface for faculty to organize ShareStream media files. It can be used to copy media from one course to another and upload new media files too. Also, it can be used to playback media.

See the UIS guide on How to Add Sharestream to a Canvas Course Menu for additional details about completing step 1.

Step 2: Contact the Library about the Media you want added

The library provides support to help add media content to a Canvas course if the media content is available. Contact the library and provide details about the content needed for the course. The library will search for the content and provide feedback on its availability for streaming in Canvas.
