Citing a Book Chapter

If Zotero can't grab a book chapter citation, you can do it manually, based on the book citation.

1. Add the book citation and then right click and select Duplicate Item. This will create a second identical Book Item.

2.  Change the Item Type to Book Section. This will add a Title field to your entry and change the Title to Book Title.

3. Add the title of the chapter in the newly created field 'Title'.

4. If the editor of the book appears as Author, make sure you select Editor in the menu next to their name. Then, click the + button to add the author of the chapter.

5. Add the page range of the chapter

Annotated Bibliographies

To create Annotated Bibliographies with Zotero you will need to download an Annotated Style. Currently, Zotero offers 4 such options, for APA, Chicago (2 options) and MLA.

To get these styles, go to Edit > Settings > Cite > Get additional styles > type 'annotated' and select the ones you want to use.

Note Taking

You can add your highlights as Notes in Zotero. In this way you can quickly sift through the most important parts of the document or use it for your paper.

1. Open the PDF of your document in Zoero and highlight the quotes you wish to keep.

2. On the right-hand side, click on the yellow button Notes.

3. Click on the + button in the option 'Item Notes' and select 'Add Item Note from Annotations'

4. Zotero will extract all your highlights as text in notes document, with the citation information. The notes will be hanging under your citation information in the Items list.

Group Libraries

To create a group library that you can share with your colleagues or your study group, you need to create an online account in Zotero. Go to the Zotero homepage > Log In > Register for a free account.

Once you finish creating your account and you are logged in, go to Groups > Create a new Group.

1. Select a name for your group. If the URL is red, then the name is not available. Select a type of membership, depending on whether you want the public to be able to see your library or not. Then confirm the creation of the group. The next step will ask you to choose some final settings for your group.

2. Now it's time to add members to your group. Invite them with their email. Separate the email addresses with a comma. Your group should now be visible under the 'Group Libraries' section in your Zotero Library.

Secondary Citations

Secondary citations are not recommended, but possible with Zotero. You can use them when you find some interesting information cited in text that has not been written by the author, but you cannot locate the original source. In this case, you need to cite both sources. Here's how to do it with Zotero:

1. When you  add the citation, open the Classic View. From there, select the source that you are using.

2. Once you have selected the source, add to the 'Prefix' field the source you found mentioned in the text you read. At the end, add the phrase 'quoted in' or 'as cited in'. Then add the page number where you found it.
