Legacy Refworks is ending soon. Migrate today.

Legacy Refworks will end in Spring 2023. At that time, all Refworks accounts will be moved to the "new" Refworks platform. If you use legacy Refworks, migrate your account now to ensure your references, folders, notes, and documents transfer to the new Refworks.

• Old "Legacy" Refworks uses www.refworks.com. If you log into this page, and your main Refworks screen looks like the top photo, you are using Legacy Refworks and will need to migrate your account.
• New Refworks uses refworks.proquest.com. If your main Refworks screen looks like the bottom photo, you do not need to migrate. No action is required – you are already using the latest version of Refworks.

Step 1: Upgrade your Refworks Account

Log into legacy Refworks, and look for the Upgrade to the latest Refworks version! button (orange) at the top of the screen.

Click the button and follow the prompts. The upgrade process will create a new Refworks account for you, and automatically copy your references and attachments into your new Refworks account. (NOTE: custom notes are NOT migrated.)

If you already have a new Refworks account, you can import your legacy Refworks references from within New Refworks.

Step 2: Log Into New Refworks

Go to http://refworks.proquest.com and log into your New Refworks account.

• Did your references transfer completely? Does the total number of references match your total in your legacy Refworks account?
• If you have attachments stored in Refworks (e.g. PDFs) or custom citation styles, did those transfer into your new Refworks account? 

If everything looks good, then update any bookmarks or shortcuts you have to point to the new Refworks URL, http://refworks.proquest.com

Step 3 (optional): Upgrade documents from Legacy Refworks to New Refworks

If you use the Legacy Refworks writing plug-ins (Write-n-Cite or Refworks Citation Manager), we recommend upgrading your documents to use New Refworks. Save a copy of your document before upgrading, do not upgrade sole copies / originals.

Steps 4 and 5 (optional): Install New Tools and re-share folders

• New Refworks has new tools that integrate with your writing software (Microsoft Word or Google Docs), and a browser extension (Save to Refworks) that can save webpages. Learn more at RefWorks Add-ons: Connecting Your Browser, Microsoft Word, and Google Docs to Refworks.
• If you shared any of your Legacy Refworks folders or collections with other users, you will need to re-share the references in New Refworks.

We recommend migrating from Legacy Refworks to New Refworks. However, you may wish to take this opportunity to explore a different reference program such as Zotero or Endnote Online.

Legacy Refworks references allows exporting references in RIS format (termed "Bibliographic Software"), used by many other reference programs.

• Log into Legacy Refworks and select References > Export References. When asked to select a format, choose Bibliographic Software. 
• Legacy Refworks will open a new window with your references in RIS format. Save the contents of this window to the desktop -- we recommend explicitly declaring the filename extension, such as myreferences.ris.
• Import the resulting RIS file into your new reference program.

Warning: Exporting to an RIS file will not preserve custom fields, notes, or attachments/PDFs.
