Capture Basics

Follow the step-by-step directions below, adapted from the Jing tutorials on TechSmith.com.

Capturing an Image

  • Select an area of your screen to capture, then click the capture yellow ray.
  • You can select a window, part of a window, or click and drag the cross-hairs to select a region.
  • After you have captured the image you want, you can add arrows, text and highlights.
  • Once you have finished your image capture, you can choose to save the capture to Screencast.com, to a specific file location of the library, or to your computer.
  • If you plan to switch to a different application like a document or email, so as to paste the image elsewhere, you will want to select share. This will automatically copy the image to your clipboard on Screencast.com
  • Sharing to Screencast.com returns a convenient link that allows you to copy and paste the link into chats, emails, and instant messaging technologies.

Capturing a Video

  • If you decide to record a video, note that if you have a microphone, you can narrate your video in addition to capturing the action on the screen. Videos are limited to 5 minutes.
  • Similar to capturing an image, select the capture yellow ray, then choose the video icon.  A 3-2-1 countdown will be given before recording begins.
  • Once you have finished, you can choose to save the capture to Screencast.com, to a specific file location of the library, or to your computer.
  • If you plan to switch to a different application like a document or email, so as to paste the image or video, you will want to select share. This will automatically copy the image to your clipboard on Screencast.com
  • Sharing to Screencast.com returns a convenient link that allows you to copy and paste the link into chats, emails, and instant messaging technologies.

Embedding a Jing Screencast into a LibGuide

To add an image to Libguides, you may simply save the image capture to your computer, then upload it via the Image Library. You also have the option to save your image capture via Screencast.com as this will allow you to generate the HTML code to embed a widget into a box or to generate a distinct link to add to various chat services.

Either way, begin by saving/sharing your image or video capture with Screencast.com

  • Select the share icon on the capture you wish to embed.

  • Copy the HTML code.

  • Click on add New Box in Libguides and select media/widget.

  • Add the HTML code.

  • Change the width or height depending your need or size of the box.

  • Click on the save & close button.
